J.P. Jackson was born in 1956.  His interest in photography was stimulated by his Father.  Jackson has been passionate about photography for over fifty years. In the mid 1970’s he had the opportunity to study “Photography and Fine Arts” with Jerry N. Uelsmann and Todd Walker at the University of Florida.

From 1977 to 1980 Jackson studied at California Maritime Academy where in 1980 he received a B.S. degree in Nautical Industrial Technology and an Unlimited Third Mates license.  From 1980 to 2013 he sailed-worked on ocean going cargo ships as a deck officer and ships Master.

After retiring from his career at sea; Jackson once again got serious about making photographs. Over the last 6 years he has taught himself several alternative photographic processes, including cyanotype, platinum-palladium, gum dichromate, carbon printing and photo intaglio print making using copperplate and photo polymer plates.

Jackson chooses to work with analog film and all of his prints are made by hand. He still enjoys making silver gelatin prints on manufactured photographic papers.  Jackson’s analog film photographic work is based on the writings and teaching of Phil Davis and BTZS (Beyond the Zone System).

By using sensitometry and film, paper and development testing it is possible to have quantitative controls in analog film photography.

My picture making is a personal need that involves constant interactive perception of the world around me.  It is like a “call and response” that challenges me and sometimes brings me joy.

My wish to communicate with others, by sharing my pictures, motivates me to make prints.

I practice “slow” photography because it suits my nature and the quality of analog photographic prints can be very beautiful.

The photo intaglio prints, posted on the HLiiC web site, are made using panchromatic photographic film for image capture as a negative. These negatives are enlarged in the darkroom onto orthochromatic photographic film to make a film positive. The film positive is used in exposing a photopolymer plate – the plate is etched in water and hardened – the plate is then inked and wiped before printing the image using an etching press.
